Sexual
assault includes a wide range of victimizations. These crimes
include complete or attempted attacks generally involving unwanted
sexual contact between the victim and offender. Sexual assaults
may or may not involve force and include such things as grabbing or
fondling. Sexual assault also includes verbal threats.
- Sexual Assault is a crime committed primarily against women under the age of 25.
- Most sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows, not a stranger.
- Men and boys are also victims of sexual assault.
- Sexual assault victims do not lie about the assaults, in fact sexual assault is a vastly underreported crime.
- Assailants use many forms of coercion, threats and manipulation to rape including alcohol and drugs.

2004 Crime in Texas Report cites the number of rapes reported in Texas
for 2004 as 8,401. This is an increase of 415 over 2003.
